Dynamic Verbs vs. Stative Verbs

Firstly, what do "stative" and "dynamic" mean?

Dynamic = moving or changing.

Stative = having a state, or existing.

Love is a state, and a verb

Dynamic verbs are verbs that describe an action, not a state.

For example, "They are crossing the street."

Stative verbs are verbs that describe a state, not an action.

For example, "I love the winter."

English words - where do they come from?

This time I would like to talk with you about a topic relevant to vocabulary.

That topic is English word formation processes.

As any student soon discovers, English has a very rich vocabulary. But obviously, it didn't get all of its words at once. Most of the English words were gradually developed, some adopted, some simply invented.

By understanding these processes, you can get greater understanding of the background of English.

More importantly,

Reported Speech Basic Principle

Reported speech, also called indirect speech, is a BIG subject.

There are many different points to cover.

Here's just one example:

I am sorry.Tense backshift

He said he was sorry.

Gerunds or Infinitives?

Gerunds and infinitives can be a bit confusing.

In other words, what is a gerund? What is an infinitive? And what's the difference?

Here is the short version:

Gerund = a noun made from a verb.

To make a gerund, you add "-ing" to the verb.

For example:

In the sent

English Parts of Speech + Quick Reference Table

There are eight different English parts of speech, but before we continue any further . . .

What is a Part of Speech?

A part of speech is a group of words that are used in a certain way.

For example, "run," "jump," and "be" are all used to describe actions/states.
Therefore they belong to the VERBS group.

"Table," "cow" and "London" are all used to name a person, place or thing.
Therefore they belong to the NOUNS group.

And so forth.
In other words, all words in the English language are divided into eight different categories.
Each category has a different role/function in the sentence.

The English parts of speech are:
Nouns,  pronouns,  adjectives,  verbs,  adverbs,  prepositions, conjunctions and  interjections .

It is important to know them well and recognize each one easily.

That will help you (or your students) better understand the building blocks of the English language and find the correct definition of a word in the dictionary.

You see, since many words are used as several different parts of speech, recognizing the correct part of speech will allow you to locate the right definition more quickly.

Now, as a quick reference, you can use this table:

English Parts of Speech Quick Table

The Future Tense in English

The question was the following:

What's the difference between the simple future tense and the future progressive tense?

For example:

Simple future tense: "I will leave tomorrow."

Future progressive tense: "I will be leaving tomorrow."

Do they have the same meaning?

Final Tip - How to Make Your Grammar Lessons More Interesting

In the last several e-mails we went over some useful tips on how to take your grammar lessons to the next level.

This time I will share with you not just tips, but a person! :-)

Her name is Elizabeth O'Brien, and you may have heard of her before.

She teaches homeschoolers and classroom teachers to be confident grammar instructors, and she has a wonderful website, full of materials to help you teach grammar.

I had the opportunity to interview her, and I would like to share this valuable interview with you:

I hope you will benefit from it.

Tip #4 - How to Make Your Grammar Lessons More Interesting

This e-mail contains tip #4 on how to increase interest, involvement and results when teaching grammar:

Tip #4

Go step by step.

Yes, there are many different grammar topics.

And yes, your student won't master English until they understand and can use many of them.

But in this case quality is more important than quantity.

Go over each subject until your student truly gets it. Until They can use it easily when reading, writing or speaking English.

Even after you fully cover that rule, go back to it in future lessons, and reinforce your student's understanding.

"Use It or loose It!" is the motto, so make sure the student continues to USE what they learn.

Next time I will share with you one final message on this important topic.
It will help you construct your lessons and make them more fun!

Tip #3 - How to Make Your Grammar Lessons More Interesting

So here is tip #3 on how to increase interest, involvement and results when teaching grammar:

Tip #3

Give plenty of examples. And make sure the student makes plenty of example sentences of their own.

An incorrect way to do this would be to teach a new grammar rule and then give an example or two.

You should get much better results if you show the student many practical examples, and then have them make at least 5-10 examples of their own.

For instance, in the English Verb Tenses section of Really Learn English, each tense has many illustrated examples, as well as example sentences. Such as:
Don't neglect the student's own examples, as they are key to mastering any subject.

There are more tips to come.

Tip #2 - How to Make Your Grammar Lessons More Interesting

As promised, here is tip #2 on how to increase interest, involvement and results when teaching grammar:

Tip #2

Teach for a reason. There is a reason for teaching and knowing each grammar rule, other than passing the test.

Each grammar rule is taught for a reason. If your student knows that reason, they will be more motivated to understand and use what you teach.

For example, why do we teach the English parts of speech?

How to Make Your Grammar Lessons More Interesting #1

Grammar is sometimes known to be not so interesting . . .

I must disagree, though, because in most cases I find grammar absolutely fascinating. :-)

But if you, or your students, are not in the same opinion as me, there are some things you can do to increase interest and involvement (not to mention results!):

Tip #1

Make sure the student understands all the words and terms in the subject you are trying to teach.

Incorrect example: teaching the passive voice without explaining what "voice" actually means in this context.

Correct example: explaining what a "voice" means first. Also, make sure the student fully understands the terms SUBJECT and OBJECT, since they will encounter them shortly

And by the way, a voice in this context means:
The form of a verb that shows whether the subject of a sentence performs the action or is affected by it.
If it performs the action - we call it the active voice.
If it is affected by the action - we call it the passive voice.

There are more tips to come.

Quick Tips

This time in the Quick Tips section I would like to share with you an interesting question I got from a teacher, together with my answer to it.
The question is the following:

Which one is more correct:
"Can I speak Italian?"
OR
"Can I speak in Italian"?

(by Franzoso E. from Italy)

ANSWER:

To understand what is the real difference between these two sentences we must look into what each of them means:

1) "Can we speak Italian?"

2) "Can we speak in Italian?"
Let's see what the online Oxford dictionary has to say about it:

Speak something
= to be able to use a particular language.
Example: "Do you speak English?"

Meaning: Are you able to speak English? Do you know it well enough to use it?
Example: "She can't speak French."

Meaning: She is not able to speak French. She doesn't know it well enough to use it.

Speak in something
= to use a particular language to express yourself.

Example: "Would you prefer it if we spoke in German?"
Meaning: Would you prefer it if we used German to speak?
Example: "He dislikes speaking in English because of his accent."
Meaning: He dislikes using English to express himself because of his accent.
(Note: you can also use "speak something" in this meaning in sentences such as: "What language is it they're speaking?")

So, regarding our original question:

How to Speak English Like Americans Do

Do you feel like your foreign accent is stopping you?

Many English learners, despite s great deal of knowledge on grammar rules and good vocabulary, can still be slowed down by their pronunciation skills.

The thing with pronunciation is that it is indeed a skill, and as a skill you can work on it and develop it further.

There is no reason why you should feel uncomfortable or uncertain when speaking English.
